Meet your Garlinge by-election candidate: Matthew Brown

17 Oct 2025
Matthew Brown

Thanet Liberal Democrats' candidate for the Garlinge by-election is local activist, Matthew Brown.

A dedicated local campaigner with a background in computing and the internet, is the founder and chair of Thanet Creative, supporting writing and creativity.

Matthew's priorities include environmental protection, sensible house building, and protecting and expanding youth and community resources. Matthew is opposed to Southern Water’s sewage discharges into local seas and beaches; is appalled at the way UKIP allowed unregulated building on farmland; and believes that KCC must be held to closer accountability.

If elected to Thanet District Council, Matthew aims to take full measure of the planning process that wants to put houses on farmland. If at all humanly possible Matthew plans to oppose such plans. Farms are for food not for concrete.

“Thanet’s housing density is up to five times greater than other districts, yet almost none of this is dedicated social housing." says Matthew "I am deeply concerned that we may be concreting over our small island while ignoring our most vulnerable. All this house building for profit at the cost of green spaces and the needs of the area must stop.”
